  12. Hi all...
  13.   I've been watching the group for a while hoping an answer to my question
  14. would appear (as well as using DejaNews to check back in time...), but none
  15. has to date, so I'll ask.

  17. First, a bit of tech setup info:
  18. A1200, 50MHz 68030 w/MMU, 25MHz FPU, 8 fast, 2 chip, 1.2 gig SCSI, 14.4k modem.
  19. AmiTCP 4.0 Demo
  20. PPP Unregistered (the newest release, whatever version it is...)

  22. Anyway...I used to run AmiTCP over a non-dynamically-assigned SLIP connection
  23. (using cslip...I had a permanent IP), and everything worked absolutely fine.

  25. Now, the Powers That Be(TM) decided that my little pet IP should go away, so
  26. I'm being forced to used a dial-up, dynamic PPP connection, which hangs up
  27. every 3 hours.  I installed PPP, and used one of the many dialer programs
  28. out there (I'm at work now and can't recall the name, but it's very nice,
  29. with an intuitive GUI and easy scripting...whichever it is, I love it).

  31. Anyhow, for some reason, there are several problems cropping up.
  32. 1)  in ENV:, my .config file keeps changing back to my old one, even though
  33.     it no longer exists in ENVARC:, and none of my scripts touch it.  I have
  34.     to hand-edit the thing each time.

  36. 2)  DNS is kaput.  For some reason, the file in db: which is responsible for
  37.     assigning DNS names/addresses (again, I'm at work and blanking on the name)
  38.     keeps getting reset to default.  I have to overwrite it from backup to get
  39.     it to work, and even then DNS sometimes refuses to work.

  41. These two things are the biggest problems I'm having.  #1 I don't mind so much,
  42. since I figure I've simply overlooked a file somewhere, but I'm absolutely,
  43. positively, 100% certain that NOTHING anywhere in my system EVER touches the
  44. db: files for a write or copy.  I have NO idea why that file keeps disappearing
  45. and it's gonna drive me nuts.  PPP without DNS is more worthless that a 
  46. straight shell account, IMHO.  Is it the TCP stack that's causing this?

  48. I've almost come to the conclusion that, to get everything to work properly, 
  49. I'm simply going to have to remove ALL net apps from my drive, remove ALL 
  50. config files, ALL setenvs and assigns, etc. etc. etc., and reinstall
  51. EVERYTHING, since the PPP installer apparently thinks you're installing it
  52. as well as AMITCP at the same time.  I am beginning to think that, after 
  53. spending months and months a year ago getting all the programs I used 
  54. configured and working together in harmony (not an easy feat, if you saw 
  55. some of the things I ran, including several AREXX netcrawling scripts I 
  56. wrote), that I'm going to have to start again from scratch.

  58. Make my day and tell me this isn't true, that there's some easier solution
  59. to all of this.
